Map showing Port O'Connor Paddling Trail location on the coast just east of Houston

Monday...
Port O'Connor, TX, was laid out in 1909 by the Calhoun Cattle Company on the 70,000-acre Alligator Head Ranch formerly owned by Thomas O'Connor.  This unincorporated fishing village grew and was later named Port O'Connor after its main land owner.  Besides cattle and fishing, the town also produced figs and citrus fruit.  Today it is a major sport fishing town...drum, red fish, and flounder with shrimp close behind.  Tourism is big here in Calhoun County.  King Fisher Beach Park built by the local King Fisher Dredge Company is a great place to picnic and enjoy the sun near the fishing pier.  There is one store with gas station.  The USPS does NOT deliver mail.  You pick your mail up at the Post Office.  There is one elementary school.  All other grades are bused to Port Lavaca.  Nearest hospital is Port Lavaca or Victoria, TX.  There are two churches here...Baptist and Catholic.

There are jetties, flats, lakes, bays, islands, points, bayous, pockets, reefs, cuts, sloughs, trenches, lagoons, and shoreline for fishermen and hunters to explore.  Duck hunting season ended Sunday.

Port O'Connor RV Park is located 1.5 miles from the bay.  Very nice and clean with great host/owner.  Site #52 was our choice.  Level gravel sites with golf course grass between sites.  FHU, WiFi, cable TV, picnic table at $250 per month plus electric at 12 cents per kwh.  Not bad!

The weather our first couple days here was nasty.  Windy blowing 15-25mph with higher gusts.  Then a little rain with cold temps and lows in the 20's.  Temps finally moderated to 66 degrees for a dip in the hot tub (center back) with temp of 99-103 degrees.  Laundry is quarters @ $1.50 per load.

Full kitchen and nice dining area.  One personal bath each ...men & women.  Here is the women's side.  Clean with hot showers.

Back to the campground with Nebraska and Oklahoma neighbors.

See you next time...by the campfire.
