The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of Earth's most powerful and inspiring landscapes.  Absolutely beautiful. Its story ranges over millions of years as a unique combination of size, color, and dazzling erosional forms.  It is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and 1 mile deep.  Its rugged landscape ranges from the desert next to the Colorado River deep in the canyon to forests atop the North Rim.

Humans have been a part of this story for years.  Broken spear points, split-twig figurines, decorated pots, abandoned mines, and historic hotels suggest someone called this home....Yavapai, Apache, Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Southern Paiute, Havasupai, Hualapai, and others.

Our day trip began with a drive into the Kaibab National Forest to  parking at Bighorn 2.  After a visit to the Visitor's Center....we started our South Rim exploration.  From here we walked a paved path to Mather Point and Yavapai Point where we caught the Blue Village Shuttle Bus to catch the Orange Kaibab Rim Shuttle with stops at various points.

We were greeted by the Kaibab squirrel looking for a snack.

One mile down (mid picture) is the Colorado River.

I"m working on my hee bee jee bee's.

This Agave found a nitche on the edge.

The views and layered colors are breathtaking.

Below, Mr. Squirrel on the ledge below us pondering what to do???

Here we are at Yavapai Point.

We took another walk to Powell Point.

Do you see the bridge over the mighty Colorado River below?  This bridge deep in the canyon suspends over the river and serves as transportation links between the South and North Rims.

Another walk from Marccopa Point to Powell Point.  Find the people out on the point (below).

See if you can find the helicopter flying just below the crack in the  dark rock mid picture below.

The mighty Colorado River about 1 mile down in the canyon.

Hanging on.

When all is quiet one can hear the roar of the rapids below.

The billowy white clouds create shadows over the canyon giving a unique look.

The Red Hermits Rest Shuttle took us to Hermits Rest for our last Grand Canyon stop.

After a cup of hot coffee, we worked our way back to the Village via the various shuttle buses and our truck for another trip down the road.

Until next time...take care...be safe...see you by the campfire.
