Sunday, January 3rd...8:45 a.m. with overcast skies...we pulled out with 5er south on I-95 for warmer temps. All rivers & streams were out of their banks. Fireants were alive & well with huge mounds rising high above the grasses. The Santee Cooper was a muddy brown. Several fender benders slowing traffic to a crawl. We made it to Golden Isle, GA, overnight parking for FREE at a super nice Walmart along with several other snowbird campers. Seafood dinner at Captain D's then walked off our dinner in Walmart.
Next stop...Ocean Pond Federal Campground near Lake City, FL. on prison road. Yep...there are 3 prisons on that road where one use to have the FL death chamber. No electric sites available, so we boondocked with water in site #41. We have traveled 450 miles. While there I picked up a dishpan full of pine needles for my basket projects. While scavenging for wood we came upon a forest ranger running a piece of equipment making fire breaks for their annual burn.
The machine was like a small bulldozer pulling a huge steel drum with cutting tines. All of a sudden the front of his rig dropped into a deep hole. We immediately stopped to watch as we thought he was a gone sucker. After several back & forth movements the front of his rig camp up only for the rear to drop just as before with him in a V shape positon. But, again he was able to pull himself up & out the deep hole to continue on thru the woods with his work. We did find a few pieces of downed wood...footy, green, & wet. With the help of campsite raked pine straw we were able to have a nice campfire. Birds of the feather were busy foraging as there was rain in the forecast along with cooler temps. Woke up to 34 degrees with J making coffee with our Coleman gas coffee pot while I baked biscuits & made breakfast. Our generator has a new name...The Beast. Named such as when the oil in it is cold J has to unhook the oil sensor for it to crank. Always learning something new from the RV Forums. Now a good laugh...Next day I used our Keurig electric coffee pot while J was running the generator. We had XM-Radio running, hot water heater, ceiling fan, & a small electric heater. When I turned ON the coffee pot, the Beast coughed & sputtered about to bog OFF. J & I hurridly turned things off except for hot water heater & coffee pot. The generator caught up and kept running. When J checked the Beast, it had hopped from one side of truck to the other. Thank goodness he had it chained or it may have jumped out. LOL He brought a battery inside putting at foot of our bed to run the TV and my Apnea machine. We are learning the ropes of boondocking (dry camping). Not bad. Before we left the Forestry Service started their burn across the lake with thick smoke billowing towards the heavens.
Until next time...see you by the campfire.
