Full moon over Pensacola Bay. What a sight.
Weather here on the Gulf Island National Seashore has been breezy & cold with several days of overcast skies. Makes one wonder if we did not make a wrong turn on this winter adventure for warmer temps.
The last big hurricane that hit this barrier island devistated the forest and animals. Downed trees and fewer animals. Have only seen one squirrel. Three armadillias have been out in the campground scavaging for food during the warmer afternoon sunny days.
The Great Blue Herons hunker behind the sand dunes for warmth from the N to NE winds. These big birds are a fisherman's nightmare at the FREE fishing pier as they are constantly trying to steal your bait or your catch. One bird's bill got hooked when it stole a fish with the hook holding its beak open and it not able to eat. It took a young fisherman about a week to solve the problem. The young man walked up on the sleeping bird throwing a net over it to catch. The fisherman along with a friend were able to get the hook out of the birds beak without a fight.
The bird seemed grateful...but, did not learn from its mistake as it went right back to trying to steal food again.
Fishing is FREE on the island pier without a license. YEAH! Have not seen anything worthwhile caught. Some fishermen said there were hog fish in abundance. Not what I like to catch. So, have not wet a hook.
There are oodles of osprey nests around with the birds doing a balancing act against the winds. They swoop down in the bay fishing for their meals. Fun to watch.
The bicycle trail to the Visitor's Center and fishing pier was a fun trip. A nice bridge over the marsh.
