Borrego Springs Metal Art...

There are 130 full-sized metal sculptures of creatures who roamed this desert millions of years ago. The artworks range from prehistoric mammals to historical characters, dinosaurs, and a 350 foot-long serpent.  The late Dennis Avery, land owner of Galleta Meadows Estate envisioned the idea of "free standing art" on his property.  Thus, the steel welded sculptures were created by artist, Ricardo Breceda beginning around 1980.

Here are a few of the metal art sculptures we saw today...

The serpent below goes under the road.  Too long to get into one picture.

Borrego in Spanish means bighorn sheep.

A gold prospector panning for gold.  Folk have left him pennies, nickels, and dimes in his pan and water bucket on his horse.
To left is Willy's CJ-3A Jeep with driver and passenger.

As I stepped out the truck and started my photo shoot of the migrant vineyard workers, I heard a shrill high pitched strange sound.  I stopped in my tracks as I did NOT know what it was or where it was and wanted to know what it was.  J got out the truck to listen.  With camera in hand we followed the sound across the highway to overlook a field where we saw the coyote below.  It would give a high pitch howl followed by 3 barks (yips).  It would trot a few feet away then turn sideways to us and do the howl/barking again each time looking towards the nearby woods. Definitely strange behavior.  Not sure of its signal....maybe mating time or maybe warning pups of danger in the area.  Was the highlight of the day for me as was the first time I had heard this noise in the wild.  WOW!

Manes and tails are all metal.  The metal art work is unique and one of a kind.

Many thanks to this man whose vision gave us a great day of adventure.  Some pictures are small; but, believe me...the animals in the pictures are life size.

Take care...be safe...see you by the campfire.
